Twitter Trend - #MorioDebate

On the evening on June 5th to June 8th, Kenyans were treated to a heated, hilarious yet informative debate on Twitter dubbed the Morio Debate. Morio is a Sheng word that refers to an ordinary person. It originates from the Kikuyu word “Murio” which means “son of” or “born of”. The debate was a foray into the age old question of ‘what gets the girl -money or physique?’. Kenyans on Twitter took to the conversation with zeal, which evolved into an exhibition of vocabulary prowess, with such words as “ondeng” meaning a gym playing center stage. Go Sheng’s Twitter handle was awash with requests for meanings and explanations, as corporates such as Safaricom and HELB jumping on the trend too. You can see more of the conversations here.
